After their battle with Mama and her gang, Cady patches up Rich and Brady’s wounds, Skilbo and Pary make their way back to the van by foot in order to start loading the supplies the following day. What they find when they finally reach the van is something nobody expected. It was completely empty, all of their supplies were missing, and a calling card was left on the drivers’ side dash. Simply an Ace of Clubs playing card. Rich recognized this to be the calling card of someone he had only heard about from before Event 0: Codename Ace. Before deciding what to do next, the group hunkers down and recovers for the night in Mama’s hotel.
It was early morning, and our ragtag group of survivors was loading up their promised spoils from the horrors of Mama’s meat house. Stopping only briefly to check on Milo and Taren, their main concern was to get on the road to where they believe the Syndicate hideout to be.
Before they could get under way, the world before them started to swim, as if they were looking at a photograph underwater. The colors slipped like in a watercolor painting. Instead of standing in front of Mama’s hotel in the morning, they were now standing in front of a large stone building. If they tried hard and concentrated, they were able to read the name of the building: Garfield Library, which was the Connaska State campus library. There was a faint wailing in the distance, which solidified into the sounds of sirens and screams coming from the nearby city center. Looking down at themselves, they noticed that they were clothed in cleaner clothing, smelled cleaner, and were carrying different equipment than just moments ago. Barely getting ahold of their surroundings, they also realize they are being pursued by a herd of 20 or more shambling humans.
Rushing up the stairs to the entrance of the library, they bar the doors with a chair leg, and take a moment to figure out what the heck is going on. In a moment of confusion, Skilbo runs to a corner of the room, takes his pants off, and runs back in front of the rest of the group. Struck by the ridiculousness of this situation and the sight of Skilbo standing in front of him with no pants and a strange look of anticipation, Rich slaps him and tells him to get ahold of himself.
They open a few drawers, turn over a few tables, and Brady checks the internet for clues. There were no webpages dated past Event 0, nothing within the last two years.
Cady starts to think that maybe this is a memory and they’ve been here before. They have to find out how they made it out of this library the same as they did before. Trying to confirm this theory, she looks around the books in the library for some clues.
Looking for more information on what was happening to them any way they could, they look out the side door of the library. They see that the horde has made its way to the that side and decide not to go out that side. They then try to open the back door of the library and experience something strange. No matter how they try, they could not open the door. They would pull it open, and in its place would be the door, endlessly like a mirror facing a mirror. Cady seems to think this confirms her theory. They couldn’t open this door because they never did the first time they were here.
Deciding something strange is definitely happening, Skilbo realizes that he can sense that this something strange is definitely coming from Pary’s direction. A small argument ensues, but they decided to table this until they can figure out how to get out of this dream-memory world.
Two doors down, they go out the other side door, and make it to the road before they run into more obstacles in this strange fuzzy world. First, they can’t get into a car because the doors won’t open the same way as in the library, then no matter how fast they run, they can’t make it any farther down the road. Deciding that this might mean they never went this way, they head back toward the library, skirting around a small group of infected on the way.
When they get around to the front of the library, they see two figures fighting infected outside the door. They are completely decked out in tactical gear, including helmets and armor. One of them is wielding a katana and the other is fighting with nun-chucks.
They almost run past them unnoticed, until Rich turns and on a hunch, yells “Hey, fuck you!” at the figures. With a last strike to the last standing infected, the one with the katana turns and takes their helmet off to look.
The figure with the Katana is Ace.
And with that, the world dissolves around them, colors slipping the same as they did before. And they are standing back in parking lot of Mama’s hotel.
Rich says “Hey guys, I think we’re fucked”.
